Akumal Diving: Still a Diver’s Paradise, or Has Sargassum Changed Everything? | The Denver Diver
Akumal remains a worthwhile dive destination — as long as expectations match current shoreline realities.
Updated for 2026. Real shoreline, real reefs, and a quieter town than Cancún or Cozumel. Akumal has long been one of the Riviera Maya's most reliable dive destinations: calm reefs, turtles that actually show up, and a slower pace than Cancún or Cozumel. Sargassum has changed the beach. It has not changed the reason we go. If you are coming for postcard sand in July, pick somewhere else. If you are coming to get on a boat and then, later, a cenote, Akumal still works. Sargassum in 2026 Seasonal blooms have gotten heavier across the Caribbean, and Akumal is not spared. By mid-August 2026, Quintana Roo had collected an estimated 96,000 to 105,000 tonnes, already more than the entire 2025 haul. Shallows that used to read turquoise go brown. Mats pile up on the sand and smell like a low tide that will not leave. Half Moon Bay has been hit especially hard. In peak months the algae can sit so deep that walking to the water is the project. Crews work it every day and still fall behind. Worse, some of it is starting to settle around coral heads and into turtle grass. That is not a weekend problem. Check a live cam before you swear at the beach. Akumal sargassum conditions is the page I use. Why you should still go The diving is still good. Getting to the boat is the part that got worse. In heavy months you often walk through shoreline sargassum to board. It is not dangerous. It is slippery, it stinks, and it is inconvenient. A thin rash guard or 1.5 mm pants keeps it off your skin. Once you are past that line, visibility usually opens up under the mats. Green turtles still feed in the bay year-round. The offshore reefs are still alive. Operators will shift pickup points when they can. Go November through April if you can. November through February is the cleanest water and the least seaweed. June through August is when I would skip Akumal as a beach trip and still consider it as a dive-and-cenote base. Where I would stay Walkable to the boats matters more than a pretty pool when the sand is a mess. For divers, Half Moon Bay condos put you close to the shops and an early call. Las Casitas Akumal is quieter, on the water, and close to food. If you want all-inclusive, Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort is the beachfront option with easy shop access. If you want simple and cheaper, Akumal Caribe still does the job. Pick one. You do not need a spreadsheet of ten hotels. Shops I would call The shop I have been diving with since 1984 is Akumal Dive Center https://www.akumaldivecenter.com/. They have been around since the early 70s and still the one I trust. The reefs worth the boat Motorcycle Reef sits 30 to 60 feet: coral heads, sand channels, and a coral-covered motorcycle that is more fun than it has any right to be. Do not touch the bike. Turtles, rays, barracuda, and the usual reef fish show up. La Tortuga is 60 to 80 feet: a turtle and nurse shark cleaning station in mini canyons. Octopus and lobster hide in the walls. At night it is a different dive. Las Redes is 30 to 60 feet, three ridges, a lot of fish. Grunts, snappers, parrotfish, barracuda, stingrays, lobsters. Lobster Condos, 40 to 60 feet, is reef fingers that actually look like apartments for eels and lobsters. Night dives here get octopus and basket stars. Tzimin-Ha is farther south, coral and sand, often one of the stronger dives of the week. I would rather do two of these well than collect all five like stamps. Cenotes are the other reason to sleep here Akumal sits in the middle of the good limestone. If the beach is brown, the jungle water is still clear. That day is already written up: Cenote Diving in Mexico. Getting there A private shuttle from Cancún Airport is the least thinking. A rental car is the one I want if the week includes cenotes and Tulum. ADO is the cheap, reliable bus. If the family wants a day that is not a reef, Dos Ojos, the Tulum ruins, and Sian Ka'an are the three I would actually book. Do not try to do all three. If you go Look at the cam the morning you care about the sand. Expect to walk through mats to the boat in summer. Prioritize boat dives over shore entries. Aim for November to April. If the family needs a beach day and the bay is a mess, spend it in a cenote or take the ferry toward Isla Mujeres or Cozumel's west side. Akumal has not lost the turtles. It lost the easy postcard. Plan for that and the week still works.
